5 Takeaways from RDF’s 25th Anniversary Summit

RDF’s 25th Anniversary Summit was an eye-opening experience, reminding me of the immense power of community, perseverance, and vision in these challenging times. As I reflect on the lessons learned, I am invigorated and more determined than ever to be part of the change our world so urgently needs. Here are five key takeaways that continue to inspire me and will shape the way I approach the future:

1. Dream Big and Believe in the Possibilities

Jose Hernandez, an astronaut who rose from the ranks of a migrant farmworker family, shared a powerful message: “Se vale soñar en grande” – it’s worth dreaming big. His journey from humble beginnings to space reminds us that our dreams shape our futures. This resonated deeply with me. When we dare to dream beyond what we think is possible, we unlock a vision for ourselves and for our communities. Our aspirations are the foundation for building a more promising future, one that transcends the limitations placed on us by society.

2. Disruption and Opportunity Go Hand in Hand

In the midst of chaos and fear, there lies opportunity. This truth was underscored throughout the summit. We often find ourselves so caught up in the disruption of the present moment that we forget to step back and look at the bigger picture. Taking time to distance ourselves from immediate challenges allows us to gain clarity. It’s in these moments of reflection that we can identify the gaps in society and recognize the opportunities to build something better. The current disruptions in our world provide the perfect environment for new, innovative solutions.

3. The Power of Language: Seek the Language of Aspiration

Xavier de Souza Briggs delivered a thought-provoking challenge to all of us: “We need the language of aspiration.” Latino communities, he explained, don’t need mere access to capital; we need connection to it. The language we use to describe our challenges and our needs is vital to the progress we make. By shifting our language from limitation to aspiration, we position ourselves to not only receive but also claim the opportunities that are rightfully ours. Words have power – they shape perceptions, actions, and outcomes. Let’s use them to inspire progress and solidarity.

4. Generosity: The Key to Stronger Communities

One of the most profound lessons of the summit was the importance of being generous with one another. We must focus on what unites us, not what divides us. Differences are inevitable, but they should not detract from our collective mission. Being generous means sharing resources, support, and even understanding, especially during times of conflict. Our strength lies in our unity. As we navigate the long game, it’s critical to foster relationships that are grounded in mutual respect and a shared vision for the future.

5. Invest in Young Latino Leaders

The demographic trends are undeniable: the Latino population is growing at an exponential rate, and with that growth comes incredible potential. It’s imperative that we invest in the next generation of Latino leaders. They are the ones who will drive change and reshape our society for the better. This investment doesn’t just mean providing opportunities but also offering mentorship, education, and support to help them thrive. The future is bright, but we must ensure that our young leaders have the tools they need to succeed.

As I left the summit, I felt energized and ready to co-create a brighter future alongside this incredible community of Latino leaders. The lessons learned at this pivotal event will serve as a guide as we continue to build a stronger, more connected, and empowered future for all.
